Chapter Seven: Essence of a Red-Headed Girl

The next two weeks with Anna were some of the happiest times in my life. We would meet for lunch together every day in various secluded locations. If the weather was nice, we would find somewhere to lounge outside, either in a shady enclosure of trees on the lawn or behind an empty academic building. We would bring an extra blanket and lie next to each other on the grass, staring up at the sky and enjoying the way the sun felt on our faces.

Every time her body was anywhere near mine, I felt shivers of electricity coil around my flesh; it took a lot of self-control to refrain from throwing her down and kissing her until she was senseless. The force of my own feelings startled me. I hadn’t realized how much I’d been suppressing before, and now that we were out to each other, it was like a dam had broken inside of me.

“I need to start bringing a post-make out brush,” Anna said one day, trying to smooth out the curls I had sent awry moments before. We were hurrying across campus and trying to look like we hadn’t just spent the last ten minutes behind the gym, locked in one of the most intense embraces either of us had ever experienced.

“My next confession is going to be spicy. I hope Father Matthew is ready,” I said.

She laughed as we reached the science buildings; there were people milling around, and so we walked side by side with the utmost formality, doing our best to maintain a respectable distance.

“Well, I’m going this way,” she said. “I have to hit up the library.”

We lingered on the sidewalk for a moment, aware of other students streaming on either side, wanting to close the space between us and knowing that we couldn’t unless we wanted to spark a campus-wide moral panic.

“Okay. I have study hall with Owen,” I said. I couldn’t stop smiling.

“I’ll see you later?”

“Definitely.”

I watched her until she vanished around the corner, then I hoisted my backpack on my shoulders and bolted off. I made it seconds before the bell went off, collapsing into an empty chair next to Owen.

“My God, Tessa,” he said, pulling a leaf out of my hair that I hadn’t even realized was there. “Check a mirror before you go out in public.”

“Oh, uh, sorry.”

“That’s a great perfume you’re wearing. It smells familiar. What’s it called again...oh yeah. Essence of a Red-Headed Girl?”

“Shhhh!” I hissed, glancing fearfully around us.

His face was almost split in half by the grin he was giving me.

“I’m invited to the wedding, right?”

“Owen, I swear to God if you don’t shut the hell up—-”

He started cackling, then shoved his knuckles in his mouth to muffle the sound. “Good for you. There’s nothing like a little afternoon snack to lift one’s spirits.”

“This conversation is over.” I pulled a few books out of my bag and slammed them pointedly onto my desk. I could feel my face burning.
